When you're down and troubled, And you need some lovin' care
And nothin', nothin' is goin' right
Close your eyes and think of me, And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

(Chorus)

You just call out my name, And you know, wherever I am
I'll come runnin' To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall, All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, You've got a friend

what are we counting?

We are in the period between the second Passover Seder and Shavuot called Sefirat Ha-Omer, the counting of the Omer. What are we counting, and what is an Omer? An Omer is a dry measure of grain, equivalent in today’s world to 10 dry cups, which is 2 ½ quarts. What is missing during this period is its historical roots. Our three Biblical festivals have ancient, agricultural origins that pre-date Judaism....Read more...

Starting with Purim on the 14th of Adar, Passover begins thirty days later on the eve of the 15th of Nisan, lasting eight days, ending on the 22nd of Nisan. Yom HaShoah begins on the eve of the 26th of Nisan. Yom Hazikaron, Memorial Day, begins on the eve of the 2nd of Iyar and flows directly into Yom Haatzmaut the next day. What a busy 45 days!  It is interesting that only one of these dates, Passover, is...Read more...

I must begin by offering words of tribute in memory of Pope Francis, who passed away just after Easter. He was a champion of the other, those in society that too often have become recipients of harsh speech and violence. He modeled what God expects of us. I had the privilege of being invited to and attending Mass on Monday evening at Saint Paul Cathedral, the seat of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Bishop Zubik spoke...Read more...

I hope that your Passover Sedarim were joyous, meaningful and delicious. Ours were, and I’m grateful. I felt a bit more nostalgic, recalling Sedarim from my childhood, earlier adulthood when our entire family gathered in our home, and the gatherings here in Pittsburgh. The list of memories would be far longer than space allows, and I couldn’t select a top ten. It made me wonder if not only does this happen at...Read more...

We will spend hours cleaning the house for Passover, shopping for Passover, and cooking for Passover. We will then sit down to a Seder that oft times has not had any preparation time. I’m not including the preparation of the charoset and the other Seder ritual foods. I’m referring to preparing the Seder to be as meaningful as possible.

The Seder was created to be a...Read more...

This coming Shabbat of April 5 will mark 1 ½ years that there remain 59 hostages in captivity in Gaza. It can be very easy not to pause and note this moment in the calendar with the constant barrage of news that we receive hourly, but then, this is not only about us. This is about the 59 human beings and their families, as none of us can truly comprehend what it would feel like to be the family of a hostage for...Read more...

This coming Shabbat we read the concluding parasha of the book of Exodus: Pekudei. The construction of all the necessary components to build the mishkan, the portable sanctuary, have been completed and delivered to Moses, as well as all of the appurtenances, and the garb for the High Priest and his retinue have been fabricated. The first thing that Moses does is bless all of those involved in the process....Read more...

It’s the time of year that those of us who live in the Northeastern United States look forward to: Spring, which began on March 20. The roller coaster weather that we have experienced in Pittsburgh this past winter has not convinced me that it will not snow next week, or on Passover, which it has done in the past. But to feel the sun shining on your face brings me such joy.

It is generally not a good idea to offer two completely different subjects in one blog, but you’ll forgive me this time, as both are competing for attention. The World Zionist Congress was established by Theodore Herzl, z”l, in 1896. His goal was to create an institution that would have a global voice in the furtherance of the reclamation of the Jewish homeland, especially in the aftermath of the Dreyfus Trial. Fast forward to today, and...Read more...
